From phone calls to independent browsing

SKILL is Straumann’s learning platform that caters to dental professionals who seek to continue their education, learn new techniques and products, and grow their network.

The main problem of SKILL was that its user experience and messy catalogue left busy dentists and dental surgeons unmotivated to browse the learning opportunities. Instead of browsing the listings themselves, they usually relied on brand representatives to reach out to them and recommend courses and events to book.

Seeing the success of independent buying on the e-commerce site, SKILL team decided to make advancements in that area as well.

Kick-starting course exploration

SKILL’s platform initially faced challenges in helping users find relevant bookings. Users had difficulty locating courses and events that matched their profiles, were accessible in their location, or were available in their language. The homepage also didn’t provide enough guidance, turning away new users by not giving any clear directions. The overall experience was discouraging and convoluted.

First step of tackling this problem was to redesign the homepage. The new version included more entry points, such as carousels featuring local offline events and popular online courses, as well as a direct call to action within the hero section. Additionally, I added sections highlighting specialisations, speakers, and brands, providing users with immediate access to content tailored to their interests and needs.

On the Catalogue page, I made finding specific bookings easier by overhauling the filtering system. This involved critically assessing the application of categories to bookings and redesigning the system feedback to clearly show available options and applied filters.

These changes served to spark users’ interest in discovering new courses and refine their search effortlessly when they feel like diving deeper.

Balancing diverse formats

Designing SKILL’s platform to seamlessly integrate both comprehensive online courses and singular offline events was a unique challenge. Online courses needed a structure to support multiple sessions and progress tracking, while offline events required a direct access to their time and place. The primary goal was to create a cohesive user experience for both formats without extensive customisation, as the platform was built using a vendor solution with limited flexibility.

Course detail page

To address this, I designed a unified Course Detail page with clear visual anchors to distinguish between ongoing courses and one-time events. A modular layout allowed presenting key information sections for all types of bookings in a consistent format. What remained unchanged between them was the focus on chunks of relevant information, quick descriptions, and Speakers – the top professionals in the field that Straumann collaborated with.

Within the Course Content and Lesson Detail pages, the different accents were also made quite obvious. A four-week-long online course depends on a multi-layered system of chapters, different types of media and contextualised note-taking. An offline get-together hosted by a university only requires an embedded map and the opening time, really.

Past the ‘Book Now’

The existing checkout was a single-page page form with cluttered layout. While useful to the representatives who memorised where each data box lies, for users this was an unusual process without a short ‘Thank you’ message after paying the bill. Mind you, some of these courses could cost multiple thousand euros!

The solution – a more traditional multi-step checkout process with a clear confirmation page that reinforces your purchase and provides you with next steps.

Taking it step by step

By focusing on consistency and simplicity, I ensured SKILL’s platform provided an excellent user experience for both online courses and offline events. Collaborating closely with developers, we leveraged the vendor's components and customized only when necessary, laying a strong foundation for future scalability and improvements.
